South of Nazilli and Kuyucak, the small town of Karacasu is a stop on the way to Aphrodisias if you are travelling by public transport. Most people will just hop out of one bus and into another one to Geyre for the ruins but if you have a bit of spare time it’s worth knowing that there is a lovely mosque here that repays a quick visit. To judge from the bits and pieces gathered on the terrace outside it, the signposted Ethnography Museum may also be an archaeological museum. In any case, you’re likely to find its doors closed.
The Hacı Ali Ağa Cami dates back to 1590 and is interesting for its wooden architecture which is very similar to that of local houses especially in terms of its wooden roof overhang. There are simple floral decorations on both the inside and out as well as some fine inlaid panels of marquetry.
Up the road beside the mosque you’ll find an impressive example of local vernacular architecture with a first-floor verandah and sweeping roof overhang.
