Just a few km southeast of Karaman, the small village of Dereköy is a sleepy farming community with a few old adobe and thatch cottages surviving. But its centrepiece – and the reason that you might want to drop by – is the attractive Kilise Cami (Church Mosque), originally built in the seventh or eighth century as a Byzantine church but converted into a mosque by Sinan Paşa in the 16th century.
The body of the church is quite small and simple with an apse added to the usual domed cruciform shape. Its design is almost Romanesque in its austerity. The conversion into a mosque was carried out sensitively with the addition of a simple stone mihrab and mimber inside and a stumpy minaret outside.
