In 2014 the radically designed Sancaklar Cami designed by Emre Arolat opened in Beylikdüzü on the western outskirts of the city. Set into a hillside, the mosque was designed to make extensive use of stone and water, and completely abjures the hackneyed Sinan template for mosques both externally and internally.
