The small and picturesque village of İzbırak, in the Tur Abdin northeast of Midyat off the road to Dargeçit, is dominated by the restored Suryani Church of Mor Dimet, tended today by Father Yakup who returned from Sweden to restore it after the village had been entirely abandoned by its Christian population in 1993.

Not everything that he has done to the church is beautiful but his enthusiasm is captivating – he will show you an undercroft full of finds he has made amid the ruins of other old buildings in the village.

Also in the village are the ruins of Mor Gabriel as well as the modern Church of the Virgin Mary (Meryemana), built c. 1960.200 DSC03779
