“Black Sand”

The Black Sea coast is a bit of an iffy proposition for those in search of a beach holiday because you’re almost as likely to be caught in a downpour here as on a similar holiday in the UK. Still, if that’s the way you’re heading then it’s worth knowing that there’s a pretty stretch of black-sand beach just west (3km) of the historic walled city of Sinop. Karakum is popular with Turkish families but you may have it to yourself midweek before the school holidays start.

It’s possible to camp behind the beach and there’s a restaurant here too.

Transport info

Half-hourly dolmuşes from Sinop run past the beach in season.
