The old Bolaman                                                      Population: 40,000

Between the mouths of the Elekçi and Bolamanlı rivers on the road from Ünye to Ordu, Fatsa is a Black Sea town whose architecture is a reproach rather than a blessing. Parts of its seafront have been kitted out with a promenade and exercise machines, and it might be nice to gaze out over the fishing harbour for a few minutes. Otherwise you’ll want to move speedily on.

What is now a largely Alevi settlement was the original site of Bolaman (now down the road), taking its name from that of a dubious character called Polemon who had been made King of Pontus by Mark Anthony.
