A resort called “Orange”                                           Population: 1,950

Sixteen km west along a lovely road from Marmaris lies the small seaside resort of Turunç. It has a spectacular setting in a bay ringed by mountains and a small sandy beach but unfortunately it has been completed developed for the sort of rather cynical tourism that sees the price of an ice-cream hiked by three times the official cost, with other prices racked up accordingly.

It’s not a place where I would want to stay. Having said that, if you’re just after a family holiday in a secluded location a fraction of the size of Marmaris or İçmeler then it just might fit the bill. Just don’t expect any historic buildings.

Further along the road Kumlubükü is much more inviting, less built-up and with most of the development set well back from a wide swathe of sand. kumlubukuKumlubükü from the ruins of Amos

Villa Florya Set on a terrace above the beach in Kumlubükü is this delightful boutique hotel worth going out of your way to stay in. Tel: 0252-476 7553

Transport info

Minibuses connect Marmaris with Turunç on a half-hourly basis (hourly on Sundays).

Alternatively you can take a water taxi either from İçmeler or Marmaris. It costs twice as much but the journey is well worth making to see some of the spectacular coastal rock formations – as well as the hideous shell of a hotel built more than 30 years ago in an isolated cove, then abandoned by its builders in the face of massive debts.
