“Fountain with a Mirror Stone”

Aynalıçeşme is that rare thing for İstanbul – a central district that is as yet relatively undiscovered. It lies just off Tarlabaşı Bulvarı at its southern end, a mere five minutes’ walk from bustling İstiklal Caddesi and at the far side of the part of Tarlabaşı that has been renovated.

This is a quiet residential area without any specific tourist attractions although there are some pleasing 19th-century apartment blocks in the narrow streets. The one building you might specifically want to seek out is the large Armenian Church. Built in 1846, this is said to be the only Armenian Evangelical Church in the world. It stands on a platform right beside the rather less conspicuous German Protestant Church which went up in 1881.gerevang
