Forget any thought of an actual garden. The Hilton Garden Inn stands on one of Kütahya‘s busy main thoroughfares and there’s not a blade of grass to be seen in its vicinity. Ignore, too, the lacklustre reception area which is completely out of keeping with the main sitting-dining area which is accessed via a lift after checking in. This is built on a grand scale, with lots of comfy seating backed by panels of Kütahya ceramics. The bar comes as a pleasant surprise in this part of the country.

The bedrooms are comfortable although somewhat dowdy in design. You’ll find tea and coffee-making facilities, an ironing board, a safe, an ergonomic chair, a good bed and a decent bathroom although when I visited the TV remote wasn’t working. They are rooms designed to cater for the business travellers who will make up the majority of the hotel’s clientele.

Breakfast in a cheerful dining room at the back of the sitting area was excellent with a wide range of cooked and cold dishes on offer. The kitchen clearly prides itself on offering something for everyone.

There’s covered parking available but the street is so busy that it’s probably best to stop in front of the hotel and ask someone in reception to park the car there for you. There’s a Migros right beside it if you need any shopping and a petrol station across the road.

Thumbs up: Comfortable beds, attractive sitting area, a bar, excellent breakfasts

Thumbs down: Decor could be cheered up and the reception area if offputting
